Lesson Plan: Safe Use of Pins and Shears
National Family & Consumer Sciences Standards:
16.0: Textiles, Fashion & Apparel
16.4.1: Demonstrate professional skills in using a variety of equipment, tools, and supplies for fashion, apparel, and textile construction, alteration, and repair.
Common Core State Standards:
RST.9-10.3 : Follow precisely a multi-step procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks, attending to special cases or exceptions defined in the text.
Purpose:
Although the use of pins and shears seems obvious, people are still injured using them. This short lesson will remind students of safe use of these essential sewing tools.
Behavioral Objective:
The student will understand and demonstrate proper use of sewing pins and shears.
Time: 1 – 50 minute class period

Anticipatory Set:
Discuss that you will be showing students how to safely use the sewing machine.
Instructional Content:

Demonstrate how to use sewing scissors and straight pins. You may use the Safely Using Sewing Shears – Handout under an InFocus projector or as teacher notes.

Demonstrate how to use the sewing machine and give students an opportunity to practice using them.

Students who were absent can access the YouTube video, Powerpoints and online quiz. Teachers may also choose to give students the Safely Using Sewing Shears.
