Lesson Plan: Fire Extinguishers

Common Core State Standards:
RST.9-10.3: Follow precisely a multi-step procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks, attending to special cases or exceptions defined in the text
Purpose:
Cooking fires are the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries according to the National Fire Protection Association. Students who understand fire extinguisher use are more likely to quickly and safely extinguish flames.
Behavioral Objective:
The student will understand and demonstrate proper fire extinguisher usage.
Time: 1 – 50 minute class period

Anticipatory Set:

Using a chef’s knife, demonstrate how to cut up a carrot into even slices.
Instructional Content:

Show YouTube video: How to Put Out a Grease Fire, and demonstrate how to put out a fire with baking soda.

Explain that sometimes you will have situations where you don’t have enough soda or don’t get to it quick enough. At that time, you’ll need to use a fire extinguisher. Show How to Use a Portable Fire Extinguisher Training Video.

Using the informational sheet: Fire Extinguisher Use under the InFocus projector and a fire extinguisher, demonstrate the parts of the fire extinguisher, and how to use it (don’t actually spray it).

Each student group of 2 will plan and perform a 15-30 second skit demonstrating how to prevent a fire, or showing what to do if a fire erupts. they will get 10 minutes to plan and prepare, then view the skits.

Students who were absent can access the YouTube videos and online quiz. Teachers may also choose to give students the Informational Sheet: Fire Extinguisher Use.
Flipped Instruction/Independent Study Option:
Students may learn all of the lesson content online at KPCompass.com. The teacher may give the student the course code: VXMQNH9P to enter they have logged onto the site. Then under “Washington State Safety Project” they can click on “Kitchen Safety Tips”, then “How to Put Out a Grease Fire,” “Fire Extinguisher Use” and “Fire Extinguisher Safety” to learn the information and to take the associated quiz.
